My name is Azra and I was born and raised in Plano, Texas. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008 with a Bachelor's in Government and went on to attain my law degree from South Texas College of Law Houston in 2012.
My interest in politics began at a young age. Growing up my father always had the news on TV and he would make me read a political piece a day in the Dallas Morning News. As I began garnering an interest, my first real political experience came when I campaigned for my classmate's dad for the Plano Mayoral race back in 1996. Even at the age of 10, I really enjoyed going door to door and asking people to vote for him. He not only won the election in 1996 but we also helped campaign for his reelection in 1998. It was such an awesome feeling to know the impact I was able to make even at such a young age.
From then on I have interned at the Texas Senate Education Committee, was a Legislative Fellow in the U.S. Congress in D.C. and worked as the Legislative Director/General Counsel for a Texas House member this past 2015 Legislative Session. I also work on asylum legal cases, am an ambassador for Popinjay-a company that focuses on ethical fashion, a board member of the Institute of Diversity and Civic Life and contribute to various South Asian American media outlets. I continue to expand my knowledge by doing research, attending policy conferences and debating with other policy experts.
When I am not completely submerged in politics, I enjoy traveling, trying new restaurants, cheering on the Longhorns and Cowboys and reading fantasy/historical fiction novels. I am very blessed to be married to the love of my life and we live with our two adorable birds in Austin, TX!
